Organic substances, esp. aromatic cpds. and/or halogenated organic substances, are broken down in liq. and/or gaseous streams, esp. in ground water, industrial waste waters and industrial waste gases, by irradiation with UV light. The effluents, contg. various halogenated organic cpds., esp. chlorinated, fluorinated, or brominated hydrocarbons and/or heterocycles and/or derivs. are treated, esp. in a flow chamber, a spray chamber or a thin film reactor, opt. in presence of an inert gas which does not absorb UV. Halides and/or CO and/or CO2 are produced. A high pressure Hg lamp is used, esp. giving radiation of wavelength 180-400 nm. USE - Trace amts. of pesticides, herbicides, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and effluents from power stations are broken down. Organic cpds. are decomposed to CO and/or CO2, and halides are completely destroyed. (10pp Dwg.No.0/0)
