A laser with an emission wavelength at least predominantly below 750 nm emits a collimated beam vertically (4) and another beam (8) in a horizontal plane across the carriageway (5) to give warning of e.g. an obstruction by vehicles (1,1a) involved in a collision. The device may be installed in one of the rear lamp clusters of a police car, or in pairs in the flashing direction indicators of a motor-cycle. ADVANTAGE - Warning is recognisable from greater distances even where visibility is impaired by pptn., road undulations or bends, roadside vegetation or immobilised vehicles.
