Perylene dyes of formulae (I) are new. A=(II), (III) or (IV). R and R1 = H, isocyclic aromatic gps., heterocyclic aromatic gps. (opt. fused to benzo rings), halo, alkyl, OR6, CN, NR4R5, COR3, NR7COR3, NR6.COOR3, NR6.CONR4R5, NHSO2R3, SO2R3, SOR3, SO2OR3, CONR4R5, SO2NR4R5, -N=N-R8, OCOR3 or OCONHR3; R6 = H, alkyl, aryl or 3-24C cycloalkyl; R4 and R5 = H, alkyl, 3-24C cycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl, or together complete a ring. R3 = alkyl, aryl, benzyl or heterocyclyl; R7 = H, alkyl, benzyl, phenyl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclyl; R8 = residue of a coupling component, or phenyl; all gps. may carry a wide range of substituents; where the cpds. contain 2 R gps., these must be different. USE - The new cpds. are dyes/pigments with a very wide range of possible uses, e.g. in varnishes, paper colours and printing inks; as fluorescent dyes in scintillators or optical light collection systems; as cold light sources for light-induced polymerisation; in dry copying, laser printing, etc.; in chemiluminescent immunoassays; as security markers, for frequency conversion, etc. (16pp Dwg.No.0/7)
