Detection of danger or damage to catalysts (IA) or catalytic coatings (IB) and detection of misfiring, esp. detection of oxidisable mixts. contg. O2 and/or ageing and/or signas or poisoning of (I) in i.e. engines involves evaluating at least two measurements, each subject to different catalytic effects. The measurements are physical values, determined at different points and/or under different conditions, pref. in the same exhaust gas stream. At least one is subject to a catalytic effect. Pref. one depends on the temp. and the change in temp. when the hydrocarbon/air mixts. reacts on the catalyst, esp. the change in temp. of an O2 sensor, is determined. The temp. sensor pref. consists (partly) of catalytic material. The difference between the temp. at points strongly and not or only slightly affected by (I) may be used, pref. with an O2 sensor at the second point. USE - The technique is esp. used for monitoring the catalyst function, misfiring and/or variable injection.
