The copying (plotter) appts. includes a driven drum and a write-head, spaced apart from the drum. A shift register's parallel outputs are connected to controlled writing elements for producing an image on the drum or on drawing paper. An image memory stores image data in binary pixel signal form, which is supplied from a data source (2). A control unit (10) for serial input of the pixel signals into the shift register is also provided. A magnetic tape or disc device can be used as the data source (2) holding its data on the corresp. storage medium and passing it on to computer (4). Data leader and image data are fed from the computer into a converter (6). The control unit reads the n-bit data words into the image store (8) and thence into an intermediary store (30) connected in series with a parallel-to-serial converter (32).
