Luggage is checked prior to being loaded into an aircraft or on board a ship for the presence of explosive materials and can be made safe. The item of luggage is passed along a conveyor that passes through a shielded container. Located outside the container a spectrum analyser detects the oscillations of a quartz crystal and decides if the timer is active. The luggage is then passed through a reinforced unit where it is exposed to microwave energy at resonant frequency that will destroy the timer and so secure the unit. ADVANTAGE - Effective against any type of explosive even when carried by terrorist.
