Continuous joining process and plant for thermoplastic filament mat - in which thermoplastic strip is applied from die to overlapping edges of thermoplastic filament mat, etc.
Process and plant for continuously joining two lengths of mat comprises thermoplastic filaments by means of an overlapping seam running along the mat length. Molten thermoplastic strip is applied between the overlapping edges of the mats and the mat lengths pass through one pair of rollers to ensure penetration of thermoplastic into the filaments. Thermoplastic strip is of the same material as the mat lengths and is formed into strips by a die located above the nip formed by the pair of rollers and between the incoming mat lengths. Plant comprises a pair of mat hand-off rollers which also act as squeeze rollers for thethermoplastic strip, a wind-up drum and an extruder with strip die. Functions of the extruder, haul-off rolls and wind-up drum are controlled by a single unit. USE/ADVANTAGE - Process and plant are used for continuously connecting two overlapping lengths of thermoplastic filament mat and enables process speeds to be easily adapted to the required conditions without solidification problems and subsequent recycling of material.
