The appts. focusses a measurement light beam (11), esp. a laser beam, onto the object measurement position (12) and detects the reflected light (13) to determine the deviation of the focal point from the object surface (10). The reflected light is focussed on a light sensitive sensor (15) via an aperture (14) by a measurement lens (2). The sensor signal is received by an evaluation unit. The measurement beam is parallel to or coaxial with a working laser's beam (19) and its focussing onto the workpiece involves the working laser's focussing lens (18). USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for focussing laser beam in CD appts. Enables distance between focussing lens, processing light source and the workpiece to be measured very accurately.
