The cigarette or cigar (1) has a mouthpiece (2) at one end and a mass (3) of easily ignitable material at the other end. This ignitable mass (3) is surrounded by a layer of friction material (4). This friction material (4) can be rubbed against a friction surface on the outside of the cigarette packet to generate sufficient heat to ignite the ignitable mass (3) which in turn ignites the cigarette. A cigar or cigarette made in this way can be lit without the need for a match or a cigarette lighter.
