An X-ray tube has a glass envelope (2) with an anode (3) and cathode (4). The anode can be either a stationary or rotary device. The cathode has an electron emitter (5) supported in a holder. - The emitter has a layer of material bonded to a carrier layer. The layers are embedded into two holders and these have connecting wires that pass through the envelope. The emitter layer contains the element lanthanum and the carrier layer (12) can be of glass, carbon or ceramic.
