The proposal is for an electric spark-generating ignition device (10) designed especially for the ignition of gaseous fuels; it has a tubular metal housing (11) with securing means (12) on the outside. In the longitudinal drilling (18) of the housing (11) is fitted a tubular electrical insulator (27) with its section on the combustion chamber side sealed while its head (27/3) projects from the housing (11) on the connection side. The flange-like fixing (37) of the central electrode (34) passing through the central drilling (31) of the electrical insulator (27) is pressed on the combustion chamber side by a mechanically prestressed spring component (48) and is thus sealed in the central drilling of the electrical insulator (27). The spring component (48) is electrically insulated from the central electrode (34) and is supported on a component (20) secured to the housing (11). The central electrode (34) can form a single piece with the connecting piece (41) but both may be separate components and joined via an equalising spring (61) or an equalising spring (61') and an interference suppressor (70).
