In the utilisation of the energy of reaction gases leaving a methanol synthesis reactor, in which at least part of the reaction gas stream is used to preheat the synthesis gas entering the reactor, at least part (pref. all) of the hot reaction gas is employed for heat release in methanol distillation. A plant, esp. for carrying out the process, has a methanol synthesis reactor and an associated multistage methanol distillation system, the novelty being the provision of a topping column followed by a refining column, each having a reboiler heated by the entire hot reaction gas stream leaving the reactor. ADVANTAGE - The process is energy self-sufficient and does not require e.g. gas generation for energy supply so that even e.g. CO-, H2- and CO2-contg. industrial waste gases can be used for methanol prodn.
