The measurer is applied for contactlessly ascertaining the thickness and/or thermal qualities of foils and thin surface layers or coats and/or the absorption characteristics of inhomogeneous materials by means of intermittent heat conductance. A microwave generator (MG) produces microwaves (MW) intensity modulated on a time basis for directing onto the object to be measured (Mo). A radiation receiver (Se) intercepts the heat radiation emitted from the excited object. The microwaves can be applied via a waveguide (H). A microwave absorber cell (MA) is pref. arranged on the side of the object (Mo) facing the generator. ADVANTAGE - Copes with number of objects not allowing heating through absorption of light and optically covered layers, e.g. under water and layers contg. high water content. No filters required to separate excitation heat radiation and emitted thermal radiation.
