A machine tool (1) has a tool magazine (2) which is equipped with a tool changing device (3). The tool changing device is controlled by the same computer program which controls the machine tool. A tool removed from the machine tool spindle is transferred to the tool magazine whilst the machine is carrying the next machining operation out. - At the same time the tool required for carrying out yet a further machining operation is brought into position. The time during which the machine tool is not operating due to tool changing is reduced to a min.
