The media whose indices of refraction and/or attenuation or their changes are transparent for the type of waves and their lengths used. A transmitter (10) and receiver (20) mounted in the measuring space measure the refractive index of the medium by propagation of e.m. waves via two windows. Several beam splitters or prisms with e.g. various refractive indices can be located in the throughflow space so that the detectable changes in the refractive index can be optically enlarged or reduced according to the purpose of the positioning. The stream with or without particle content to be measured, monitored etc. flows orthogonally w.r.t. the transmitter, filter (40), lenses (70,71) and receiver (20) arranged axially.
