The lamp (2) is operated from AC mains (3,4) with DC produced by a high-voltage circuit (5) capable of giving sufficient voltage to strike the discharge. It has sufficient DC power for long-term operation. A reversing switch (8) is interposed between the high-voltage output terminals (6) and the lamp electrodes (7). A high-frequency generating circuit (15) is supplied with mains voltage. Its output at a multiple of mains frequency is fed to a full-wave rectifier (18). USE/ADVANTAGE - The DC is produced at comparatively low cost with the high-frequency section encapsulated and screened to suppress interference.
