The diameter of a tube (2) is expanded throughout its length by a hydraulic appliance consisting of two end caps (1a,1b) which are fitted with sealing rings (3) and placed over the ends of the tube. A cylinder (7a,7b) is formed in one end cap and receives a piston (4) which has a piston rod (6) which is fasstened to the other end. A liquid pressure medium is injected into the cylinder region (7b) and into the interior (7c) radially in order to secure cooling fins attached to the outside of the tube.
