Opthalmological contact gel - can be used in virectomy to hold contact lenses in place, in three mirror contact glass investigations and in echography
A new ophthalmological contact gel is highly viscous, optically transparent and does not irritate the mucous membranes of the eye. USE/ADVANTAGE - The gel can be used in vitrecomy. The contact gel (2) is placed on the cornea (7) so that the contact lens (1) can be placed on top without damaging (e.g. scratching) the corneal epithelium. The contact lens is thus situated in labile equilibrium on the cornea, swimming in the contact gel. During operation the new gel inhibits the normally frequent slipping of the contact lens. The optical image formation inside the eye is not clouded with air or blood collecting under the contact lens. Unlike in previous cases. The gel can also be used with three mirror contact glass according to Goldmann and in echography, eliminating air between the ultrasound head and the eye which would alter the sound waves. Investigations do not need to be interrupted by topping up of the gel to replace gel which has flowed away. In an example, powdered hydroxy propyl cellulose, e.g. Methocel E4M Premium was dissolved in 0.9% saline, filtered (e.g. over a G2 frit) to a concn. of 3%, filled (e.g. into plastic syringes) and finally sterilised.
