Pouring aid for metallurgical vessels with sliding gate systems, esp. steel pouring and treatment ladles, uses sand filled sheet metal cylinder with axial slot and one end covered by heat sensitive material and is inserted in pouring channel of ladle in lying position. Pref., thin sheet metal sandfill cylinder is formed as an open shell with full length axial slot one tenth of dia. in width, with slot and one end covered by heat sensitive material. The other ladle facing end is closed by an asbestos free insulation cover. The cylinder is inserted in the pouring channel of the preheated ladle in lying position through the open gate prior to charging. The heat sensitive material burns out and allows the sand to flow into unfilled spaces in the pouring channel when raised upright. ADVANTAGE - Use of claimed sandfill cylinder ensures freeflow pouring when slide gate is opened. Also, economises in filler sand consumption and eliminates need for oxygen cutting of ladle.
