Recovering metals and coatings from composite materials by dissolving the coating on the metal with solvents, whereby non-polar layers in the composites are dissolved with dimethyl- and/or trimethyl- and/or tetramethylbenzenes and/or ethylebenzene and/or isopropylbenzene with heating to 40-280 deg.C pref. 75-220 deg.C and esp. 138.4-204 deg.C, opt. under pressure and with a residence time of 0.5-360 min., pref. 5-120 min. and esp. 5-60 min., and polar layers in the composites are dissolved with THF and/or methylated derivs. of this and/or dioxan and/or methylated derivs. of this with heating to 40-200 (60-280)deg.C, opt. under pressure, and with a residence time of 0.5-360 (5-60)min. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is esp. useful for separate recovery of the metal and plastics components in composite metal and plastics laminate
