A method of locating a breakage point in the reinforcing steel of reinforced concrete involves applying a magnetostatic and/or quasimagnetostatic field in the region of the reinforcing steel which is thus magnetised. An electromagnetic demagnetising field is applied to demagnetise the mesh. The magnetic field of the remanent magnetism in the steel is detected and a peak in the field used as a criterion for the breakage point. ADVANTAGE - Enables reinforcing steel breaks to be located even when there is a concrete steel mesh between the reinforcement under investigation and the concrete surface.
