A feed line (2) carries useful cells, i.e. fixed length blocks of information, to the time-division multiplex transmission system. The useful cells are distributed to at least one subscriber appts. (5) via a coupling device (1). At least one of the subscriber appts. produces one or more control cells for transmission to a controller (6). The useful cells have a head code indicating a following information field. The head code may be e.g. 5 bytes in length and the information field 48 bytes. The head code contains path indicators, error detection data and control information. USE/ADVANTAGE - For transmission of telephone, picture, audio or television signals. Subscriber may select information he requires.
