Prepn. of silylated prim. or sec. amines is by reaction of amines of b.pt. above 50 deg.C with hexamethyldisilazane in presence of an acid (pref. cation-exchange) catalyst with addn. of moisture and opt. with a carrier gas is that the reaction mixt. water content is kept at 0.001-2 (pref. 0.01-0.5) wt.% over the whole reaction. USE/ADVANTAGE - The prods. are useful as intermediates in organic chemistry, as silylating agents in polyimide prodn. or in SiN ceramics prodn. High yields are obtd. in short reaction times, there is no need for a solvent to be present, drying is not required and the reaction prod. is easily sepd. from the catalyst
