Energy consumption in high temp. regions (900-1800 deg.C) of a blast furnace plant with blast heater is reduced by reducing the temp. drop of hot gases when passing through cooled valves, etc., partic. gate valves for hot blast, to a min., partic. less than 15 deg.C, by use of a cooling medium whose vapour pressure curve is always below that of water.
