Energy consumption in high temp. regions (900-1800 deg.C) of a blast furnace plant with blast heater is reduced by reducing the temp. drop of hot gases when passing through cooled valves, etc., partic. gate valves for hot blast, to a min., partic. less than 15 deg.C, by use of a cooling medium whose vapour pressure curve is always below that of water. Pref. a heat transfer oil is used, with b.pt. at ambient pressure of about 250-300 deg.C. ADVANTAGE - Reduced thermal stresses on valves, etc., allowing lighter construction, allows heat recovery from coolant.
