The auger-type centrifuge separates slurry etc. into a phase with low liquid content and enriched with solids to the maximum degree, and a phase containing the minimum amount of solids. It comprises a cylindrical centrifuge drum tapering at the discharge end and rotating on a horizontal axis, and containing a conveyor auger rotating at a different speed. The drive mechanism is electric and/or hydraulic. The pitch of the auger turns (3) is finer inside the tapering portion (1') of the drum (1) than inside the cylindrical one (1"). When a predetermined torque value is approached or exceeded for the auger, a controller (10) increases the difference between its speed and that of the drum. A speed-control (11,12) is adjustable to give a centrifugal pressure of at least 20 bar at the drum inside wall. ADVANTAGE - Maximum separation under heavy load where solids content fluctuates.
