The position is checked w.r.t. a reference axis through an optical view finder observation line in the laser distance meter. The reception detector of the laser distance meter is illuminated such that at least one pulse train, whose angular position w.r.t the reference axis is formed into a laser transmit pulse in preset time intervals and a time-fixed relation. The first or the last optical pulse in the reception field of the detector trips a distance display, whose value provides an unambiguous forecast over the position of the first or last optical pulse within a defined train, and thus the position of the reception field to the reference axis, via a table.
