The output signals of the receiver (7) provide position information and, either separately or combined, a sum or amplitude value and a value for a partial width of the analysis signal. The imaging optical element following the differential cuvette (5) can be a lens or mirror (8). The latter sends the light from the source (1) once again through the cuvette but offset at right angles to the deflection in the latter. An optical fibre (11) can be used to provide a reference signal, its incident end being placed near the incident aperture (3) of the measuring appts. Its emergent end leads to another receiver (12). The main receiver is a strip type, e.g. using CCD lines. USE/ADVANTAGE - Avoids use of movable components. Highly sensitive registration of refractive indices over wide range. Compact and flexible, e.g. can also measure transmission and dispersed light levels.
