CaC2 prodn. is by heating molten pig Fe and lime in an oxygen converter to above 1650 deg.C, O2 is fed to initiate an exothermic reaction and redn e.g. the Fe3Co. CaC2 is formed by feeding in C. Pref. first stage O2 blowing lasts for about 15 min and is controlled so that the C in the melt does not go below 0.5%. Co produced is collected and reused. Amt. of time used in the first stage is 1/5 the amt. of pig Fe. Speed of the second stage process may be increased by bottom blowing the converter with argon. This endothermic reaction takes place with several additions of Fe3C to maintain the temp. ADVANTAGE - O2 converter process lends itself to the production of CaC2 as the exothermic reaction in the first stage produces the heat required to establish the optimal conditions needed, i.e. the C has better solubility in the Fe and the C has better reactivity with other materials notably
