Fire extinguishing water with sticking property consists of a thickened aq. suspension (I) of amorphous synthetic SiO2 (II). (Pref. (I) is obtd. by treating a fluid suspension of 1-7, pref. 2-5 (wt.)% (II) in water or a SiO2 sol of the same concn. with 0.1-1.5, pref. 0.1-0.5% polyethylene glycol or polyoxyethylene fatty alcohol ethers or sorbitan monofatty acid ester of mol. wt. 700 or more at pH 2-7, pref. 5-7. It may be diluted with water in 1:(1-3) ratio before spraying. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is claimed for spraying on the required objects with conventional fire extinguishers. Claimed advantages are as follows. (I) is deposited on the object, where it holds a reserve of water which inhibits the spread of fire and prolongs the extinguishing effect of the water by preventing run-off. When the extinguishing procedure is over, it can be dissolved again to prevent contamination or removed without damaging the objects, e.g. by spraying off with water. Even after the water has dried up, the slight residue of incombustible SiO2 reduces the spread of fire and also absorbs harmful by-prods. from the fire
