A process of conditioning zirconium silicate lining elements, esp. for glass melt baths, which contain impurities includes treating the lining elements with an alkali ion and halogen ion, nitrate ion or organic anion melt at increased temp., before the linings are built into the bath. The elements are pref. handled at 900-1500 deg.C for at least 12 hours. ADVANTAGE - The process is simple and ensures that gas bubbles doe not develop from the lining.
