The air in a room (4) is circulated (10) through a first heat exchanger (14) whence coolant is piped (16) through a compressor (20) to a second heat exchanger (22), returning via a constriction (24). Power supplies (18,28,30,38) for the compressor (20), evaporator and condenser fans (12,26) and room lighting are derived from a photovoltaic solar collector (36) via a DC-DC convertor (34) and a buffer storage battery (32). Alternative embodiments providing either indirect heat exchange or combined space heating and cooling are also disclosed. USE/ADVANTAGE - Surplus solar energy is utilised in regions where reliable and inexpensive mains electricity supply cannot be guraranteed.
