To determine the tensile strength of fibres, and esp. ceramic fibres, they are bent and the bending path is measured up to the point of damage through the bending action. The end of the fibre is firmly bonded by adhesive, and the fibre is bent round the bonding point. Or the fibre is secured to two fixed and spaced surfaces, and a pressure piece is inserted into the gap between them, at a defined distance from each surface, to bend the fibre between the surfaces. The process is esp. for silicon oxide fibres in the exhaust gas filters of vehicles, to determine their tensile strength as they are partic. affected by after crystallisation at high temps., attack from oil ash, coating, chemicals and other attacks which lead to splitting. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method is esp. for ceramic fibres in a glow treatment with coating. The technique tests the tensile strength without exerting a pull on the fibres.
