The travelling wave tube has a helical delay line (1) supported by spaced ceramic rods (2), with a high temp. diffusion welding connection between the delay line and the ceramic rods (2) at their points of contact. Pref. the helical delay line (1) is made of molybdenum or tungsten, with its surface coated with titanium, zirconium, hafnium, or gold or copper. The ceramic rods (2) are made of a good heat conductive ceramics material, e.g. BeO. The diffusion welding is effected at a temp. which is between 5 and 20 per cent below the melting temp. of the metal contacting the ceramic rods (2). ADVANTAGE - Improved high frequency characteristics and reliable heat conducting fixing of helical delay line to ceramic rods.
