A multiprocessor system for use in road vehicles has a pair of processors (12,14) coupled via a bus system (20,22) to an I/O interface (18) and a common memory (16). The interface connects to actuators (42,46) and sensors (34,36). A logic circuit (24) provides a power-on reset function. A watchdog function is built into the system to monitor the condition, restarts being generated following a fault condition. Warm and cold start conditions are differentiated to select the appropriate routine. A check is included to determine if a predetermined number of resets has been made.
