A liquid container with a hydrostatic level sensor has a return connector (19) opening into the container, a small dia. measurement tube (24) extending from above the max. liquid level to the container floor, a pressure difference sensor (24), a blocking valve, a device for emptying the measurement tube and an evaluation unit. The instantaneous level is determined from the difference between the pressure difference sensor signals for the filled and empty tube. The emptying device has a jet pump (23) at the lower end of the tube which operates on the venturi principle. This generates suction in the tube which can be randomly connected to the return connector. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for motor vehicle fuel tank. Uses very simple pump for emptying measurement tube which requires no additional power source.
