Applying flexible coating to profiled surface of flat components - where coating is drawn onto component by membrane, then pressure is applied by stronger membrane fixed to upper press platen
Applying a flexible coating to the profiled face of a flat plate component. The component is placed on a press platen and the flexible coating e.g. a veneer is positioned above. An adhesive layer is applied to either the coating or the workpiece. An unheated preforming membrane is lowered onto the coating pushing it against the component. Vacuum application removes air between the membrane and component. A heated, extensible pressure application membrane is then lowered onto the preform membrane and air pressure applied behind the pressure membrane to force the preforming membrane and coating tightly onto the profiled component face. Plant comprises a press with fixed lower and moving upper platens. An elastic pressure membrane is suspended from the upper platen, encloses a pressure chamber and has a heating element. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process and appts. apply flexible coatings e.g. veneers, decorative papers to flat profiled components and enable contours, even with small radii to be closely followed without tearing or bridging.
