The transport system for items to be carried to at least one destination has carrier rails and a branch deflector points to connect the carrier rails. The destination point for the item is identified through the data held at the item, for a control to set the deflection points to give a straight path to the identified destiantion through the index identity of each set of points, and the identity of the destination, to give the most direct route. The identification unit registers each group of destinations in a series according to the points where the items are to be carried and forwards the identity data when the item is on the ove to its destination. A memory can show th gp. of destinations togehter with the gp. of items to be carried to them, with an output to forward the identity and destination whil the itmes are on the move. A second memory carries the possible alternative routes together with the index identity of each direction change point along the planned route. The control plans the route according to the data in the first memory and amends the route, if required, from the data available from the second memory. ADVANTAGE - The system gives a rapid and simple route change, to allow for current conditions, and the transport system can also be extended without difficulty.
