Preheating circuitry for cold-start of diesel engine - has sensor detecting occupancy of driver's seat in motor vehicle

The driving position has an out of contact sensor for seat occupancy. As soon as the driving seat is coupled the sensor activates the glow-plug circuit to minimise the delay time in starting the vehicle. A simple IR sensor mounted under the steering column provides a reliable sensor. The IR sensor is fitted with an aperture to limit the field of scan to cover the width of the driving seat. This ensures that rear seat passengers do not cause premature activation of the glow-plug circuit. The circuit is further controlled by time and temp. with longer preheating applied in colder conditions. ADVANTAGE - Automatic glow-plug operation; reduces starting delay.
