Prodn. of hexamethylenetetramine comprises reaction of HCHO (4-6 mol) with NH3(1 mol). in an aq. phase at 40-90 deg.C, removing water at reduced pressure. The prod. is sepd. from the aq. phase, washed and dried. The condensate is passed through a reverse osmosis unit, and the retained liquors (contg. intermediates and unchanged starting materials) are recycled, while the permeate is discarded. The HCO stream is obtd. by the catalytic oxidn. of MeOH but is not purified further. ADVANTAGE - The process is both economical and efficient
