The appts. checks the sealing of wheels using a test gas. Or a base plate, one wheel rim is laid against a sealing line and a bell housing (5) is laid also to form a seal. A cover plate (6) in the bell housing is applied to the other wheel rim to form a seal and can be pneumatically forced against it with variable force by a controllable pressure source connected to the space between the cover plate and bell housing floor. The test gas source and a detector are associated with the respective spaces inside and outside the seals. The cover plate is a piston sliding in the bell housing to maintain a seal. At least one spring (22) between the edges of the bell housing and piston forces the piston into the bell in the absence of other forces.
