A control system for a locking differential (4) has a microprocessor to monitor the wheel spin of the driven wheels (9, 10) by comparing their speeds with that of the non driven wheels (11, 12). The locking clutch is applied at a rate depending on the amount of wheel spin and other vehicle parameters, e.g. a vehicle speed, throttle position, steering etc. If both driven wheels slip, the clutch is controlled to retain a controlled amount of grip on at least one wheel. The total torque is also reduced. ADVANTAGE - Controlled clutch action at all vehicle dynamic states. Improved stability.
