3-hydroxy-butylidene hydantoins of formula VIII 0, 0-di-substd. -2-deoxy-D-ribose -1-spiro-5'-hydantoins of formula (II)-(VI) 2,5-dihydro derivs. of formula III and protected D-ribose-1-spiro -5'-N'-beta-hydantoins of formula (II) and alpha. (IIa) are new, R1 = C(A)3, CH2A or (i), (i)=Si(R)n(A)m, R12 and R22 = ACH2, R = 1-4C alkyl, R11 and R21 = ACH2 or R1' or R1' = CA3 or (i) and R2' = H, R4 = SO2A, SO2R, haloalkyl sulphonyl COOA, COR, A = phenyl substd. by 0-3 of 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen, m and n = 0-3, m+n = 3. Prodn. of D-ribose-1-spiro-5'-N'-beta or alpha-hydantoin of formula (II or IIa: R1 = H) is also claimed. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) and (Ia) herbicides, also known as hydantocidins. (II) and (IIa) can be prepd. in high yields from readily available D-ribose derivs. (c.f. J02085287).
