An optical and ophthalmic glass is described, with a refractive index nd /= 1.68, an Abbe number vd /= 43, good chemical resistance and very good stability to crystallization, which has a composition on an oxide basis in wt.% given by: SiO2, 24-35; B2O3, 10-18;Al2O3, 0-1; SiO2 + B2O3 + Al2O3, 39-48; SiO2/B2O3 1.6; Li2O, 0.5-6; Na2O, 0-6; K2O, 0-4.5; Li2O + Na2O + K2O, 3-6.5; MgO, 0-3.5; CaO, 6-18; SrO, 3-10; BaO, 0-3; ZnO, 0-3; PbO, 0-3; MgO + ZrO + SrO + BaO + ZnO + PbO, 11-30; TiO2, 2-4.9; ZrO2, 2-9; Nb2O5, 2-13; WO3, 0-3; TiO2 + ZrO2 + Nb2O5 + WO3, 15-24; La2O3, 17-21; and optionally fining agents in the usual amounts. A ratio of TiO2 to ZrO2 of 0.3-1 and of SiO2 to B2O3 of 1.9 is required for good chemical resistance. Up to 1 wt.% of the SiO2 content can be replaced by P2O5.
