Biologically activated body prepn. by treating flowing glass body - with aq. culture solns. of microorganisms and freeze drying, used in treating contaminated soil
Biologically activated bodies are prepd. by treating free-flowing, non-biochemically activated glass bodies, of size 0.1-2mm (0.3-0.5 mm), with an aq. culture soln. of microorganisms, opt. with addn. of harmful substances and inhibitors, in which the microorganisms have multiplied, providing in the culture soln. selective effective conditions which prevent the growth of coliform bacteria, and after exposure, freeze-drying the glass bodies and prepn. in the dry state. USE/ADVANTAGE - In decontamination of strongly loaded soils, the bodies are injected at a definite, pre-determined depth into the soil, or are sprinkled on the surface, followed by working of the soil. The concn. of activated bodies depends on the biological activity of the activated bodies, the concn. of harmful substances, and the conditions (moisture, temp., deg. of aeration of the soil). The soil may then be treated with an aq. soln. of additives, or with water. The soil may have been damaged by sea water; the bodies are activated with microoorganisms which die away with lack of harmful substances, and an excess of microbiologically active material is added. In prevention of damage to ground water from soils loaded with harmful substances, the bodies are sprinkled on the surface, and carry microorganisms which die away rapidly or form permanent forms in absence of harmful substances. Use of large amts. of substances foreign to the system is avoided. The materials can be stored, or prepd. quickly, to deal with sea water damage
