In prodn. of a wear-reducing coating on the surface of a screw used in a plasticising equipment, e.g., extruder, a coating material contg. at least 71% Mo is introduced into a laser beam and deposited on a basic steel body, at least the outer part of which is brought to a molten state. The powder feed and laser beam are at an actue angle to one another. ADVANTAGE - Distortion and cracking are avoided.
