Two motor-powered intermediate carriers (10, 18) face each other on opposite sides of a transport channel (T) for single sheets (16). A copying and developing station (2G, EY, EM, EC, EB) is assigned to the first carrier (10) for producing a series of toner images on both sides of separate sheets. The toner images assigned to the front side are transferred directly onto the single sheets in a front side transfer region (FT). The toner images assigned to the reverse side are first taken up in a transfer section (VE) on the second carrier (18) for intermediate storage before being transferred to the reverse sides of the sheets in a reverse side transfer region (RT). Transfer is electrostatic. The toner images on both sides are fixed together in a fixer station (26). Single sheets can be placed next to each other for processing together.
