The blood pressure is measured by evaluation of a pulse wave produced by an arterial blood vessel of the patient in synchronism with the heart beat. A pressure sleeve (10) and source (18) are used to exert pressure on the arterial blood vessel. A switching valve (16) and a control unit (28) regulate the pressure force exerted. The control unit also serves as a measuring section and control the pressure force exerted to a first rated value. It receives the pulses produced by the blood vessel for evaluation. A detector (34) lies distal to the pressure sleeve from the pespective o f the patient's heart. The control unit includes a microprocessor that comprises a c.p.u., a ROM, a RAM and an I-O unit. ADVANTAGE - Recognises insufficiency of stipulated value and remedies it before blood pressure measurement takes place, thus reducing time taken.
