Side impact protection device for motor vehicle occupants - has pivoted seats, to place backrest between occupant and car-side during crash

The device is for protection of an occupant during side impacts. A vehicle seat (3,4) is pivoted about a mainly vertical pivot axis (11,12). A pivot drive (17,20) engages on the side during an impact on the vehicle side wall (1), so that a back rest section (7,9) of the seat is moved between occupant and side wall. The section is formed by a side part of the back (5,6). With a seat facing in direction of travel of the vehicle, the pivot axis is located in front of the centre of gravity (13,14) of the occupied seat. The seats are connected by the pivot drive, and there is a locking device (19), active in the pivoted position.
