The vehicle wheel suspension system regulates the damping forces of the individual shock absorbers, in dependence on the detected vertical oscillation of the vehicle wheels. A respective actuator is used to vary the damping force characteristic data for each shock absorber, in response to regulating signals provided by a control device. The damping force values are adjusted in several steps corresp. to the travel characteristics when the shock absorber is switched between a hard and soft ride. The damping characteristic may be switched from soft to hard ride when a given vehicle velocity is exceeded, when the vehicle is rapidly braked, or when the vehicle loading is above a given value.
