The magnetic disc drive has a number of discs (8) supported in a stack with separating spacers (9) and located on a central spigot (10). The spigot is fixed to a spindle (2) that is uspported at two points on ball bearings (6, 16) and carries the rotor (3) of a drive motor. The bearing outer races are located within a housing (7) which also supports the stator (4) of the motor. The disc stack is subjected to an axial load applied by a spring disc (11). Fixing screws (13) are tightened until the required load is attained. The outer edge of disc (111) presses against the stack. ADVANTAGE - No damage when magnetic disc is installed.
